April Sketchy Challenge Blog Post 3-in-1 challenge.
Happy April everyone! Kerry Engel here. I thought this month we could talk about design principles.
I’ve always been a disciple of the CRAP Method of designing: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity. These are the four principles that dictate pretty much everything I create.
Here’s how I’ve used these principles in the April sketch:
- Contrast is created through the placement of the photo strip on the left and the white space on the right.
- Repetition is expressed through the repeating of the circle motif and the rectangular shapes in the photos and journaling blocks.
- Alignment is achieved by keeping all the spaces between the elements a similar distance apart.
- Proximity is attained by keeping “like” elements close and tight. The journaling is kept together (in one area) and isn’t spread all over and the photos are kept collected in one area too.
This months sketch is based on these principles and it allows room for some good story telling. I’m looking forward to seeing how you all interpret it and make it your own.
I’d also like to challenge you to try in on an art journal page, like I did on the Bonjour page below.
I’ve never owned a circle punch before. I am regretting that decision now that I have a Creative Memories circle punch. It’s a really fun way to create your own embellishments and repeatable elements.
Supplies: Creative Memories, Japan Christmas collection circle punch and Decorative Trimmer, Studio Calico wooden letters, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L, recycled ribbon, vintage embroidery thread.
I love the page so much. I got the inspiration for the background from the wall in a restaurant. I’ve once again used Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L art journal page as my base.
I love the heavy kraft colored boards, they are perfect for art journals as they take a lot of abuse. I’m going to Paris this spring. I hope to add a small photo to this page when I get back!
Supplies: Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L Donna Salazar Denim Art Journal, Pentart Iron Paste distributed by BoBunny, FabScraps chipboard, Ranger stain, texture paste and gesso, Clearsnap ColorBox ink, glitter, embossing powder and stencils, Impression Obsession stamps, Studio Calico wooden stars, handmade title.
This was quick and easy to create. I just pulled together the elements from a Creative Memories kit and added a bit of ribbon from my stash.
Supplies: Creative Memories patterned paper and embellishments, Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.

Love the layout Kerri. Sorry you weren’t able to get a hold of a circle punch sooner. I love it. So great to use in borders and titles and even punching scraps and using them as a back ground
Haha, crap method of design. Great tips!!!. #perfect
