Hello everyone – Kelly Klapstein here today on the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine blog. Fall is the time of year when I like to change up the home decor and add some new hand lettering projects to celebrate the season. I have been inspired by our resident colouring artist Betty Hung, who illustrates and colours like no one I have ever seen!
So I decided to design a hand lettered Autumn-themed piece and use my Chameleon Pens products to colour it.
I have used the Chameleon Color Tone pens before, but I haven’t used their Color Tones pencils…and this rainbow of pencils are just gorgeous in the box. There are 25 double-ended pencils, which adds up to 50 colours!
For every hand lettered project, my first step is to sketch a design roughly with pencil. I have an 8 x 10″ frame for this piece, so I knew the measurements of the layout.
Then I took a clean sheet of drawing paper and drew my leafy wreaths and pumpkin with the black Chameleon Detail pen.
Often I draw with pencil first, but after practicing sketching pumpkins and leaves, I just went for it and drew this freehand. You can draw lightly with a pencil first and then trace over with the Detail pen, erasing the pencil lines after you’re done.
To colour the pumpkin, I started with the lightest orange Color Tones pencil, then added accents along the pumpkin black lines with darker oranges and browns.
I really thought it was cool how these coloured pencils are double-ended…..just flip the pencil over to get the other colour and blend them together.
After colouring with the pencils, I went over the entire pumpkin with a neutral Chameleon Color Tone Pen in peach, and that really smoothed out and blended the pencils even more.
After the pumpkin was done, I worked on the hand lettering words with the Chameleon Detail pen and Black Color Tone Pen. This faux calligraphy technique will be featured in my Hand Lettering article in our Winter issue. I lightly drew guide lines with a pencil and ruler so I would know where to write the words. To colour the leaves in the wreath, I used a few shades of green Color Tone pencils.
I’m so happy with the way this turned out, and it was much quicker than I expected. The colouring was a breeze and these pencils worked beautifully with the Color Tone pens.
Bring some Fall colours into you life with some Chameleon pencils and pens! You’ll love them.
