The Christy Riopel Art Scholarship

Browsing

Each and every week, we look back in time and remember the beautiful art of our late friend and colleague Christy Riopel. Christy’s designs are timeless. So many of her creations from way back when continue to inspire us today. This week we are looking back to the Winter 2013 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. In this issue, Christy wrote a feature article on pocket scrapbooking. At the time pocket scrapbooking was just breaking ground and one of the hottest scrapbooking trends.  Who knew that this awesome form of memory keeping would continue to be a trendy way to scrapbook even today.  Pocket scrapbooking has undoubtedly, stood the test of time! Here is Christy’s article along with two projects that were featured in this article – enjoy. Have a wonderful Saturday everyone. In loving memory of Christy Riopel – we continue to raise money for the Christy Riopel Art Scholarship.…

This week we are visiting the fall 2015 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. In this issue, Christy Riopel had a ton of fun creating with Spellbinder dies and the Grand Calibur die cutting machine. One of the projects Christy created for this article, featured a cameo background she cut out using a die and a die cutting machine. So simple and so stunning. You will want to try this. Cutting A Cameo Background by Christy Riopel Sometimes it is nice to remove some of the background from a photo without cropping the entire image. This cameo style of cutting,  is a beautiful and unique technique that will allow you to do just that. 1. Hold the chosen circle or oval die over the photo. Cut along the part of the image that you want to keep from the outside edge in, making slits in the photo. 2. Weave the die into the photo,…

Today we are going WAY back to the Fall 2012 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. Each issue, for the past 12 years, we highlight a number of products that we think are HOT or products that our team members have fallen in love with and think you should –  most definitely – be playing with! Here is a look back to the Fall 2012 issue. What once was called “What’s Cool in Canada” and later become known as (and is still known as) “The Must List” . These were Christy Riopel’s product choices back then. Although Bazzill Basics Paper no longer manufactures this particular line of patterned paper – Spectrum Noir Markers are still on the market today. A sign that these markers have stood strong, against the test of time! Great choice Christy. Have a wonderful Saturday everyone. In loving memory of Christy Riopel – we continue to raise…

This week, in our regular #RememberingChristy segment, we are looking back to the Fall 2015 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. Christy Riopel was an avid art journaler. We could literally fill pages and pages of our magazine with her beautiful work. In the fall 2015 issue, she contributed one of her art journal pages to a feature we did on ‘The Joy of Journaling’.  This design would later become a staple in Chirsty’s art journaling classes. It was the first design she introduced her students to and can probably be found in everyone’s art journal who was lucky enough to have taken one of Christy’s classes. Here is Christy’s design. I hope you are able to find some time today to art journal or find a little you time! Have a wonderful Saturday everyone. In loving memory of Christy Riopel – we continue to raise money for the Christy Riopel…

For those of you new to our blog I would like to welcome you to our regular feature – #RememberingChristy. One and half years ago our dear friend and work colleague, Christy Riopel passed suddenly away. Christy was a huge part of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine for close to 8 years and will forever be apart of our creative souls. On saturdays we celebrate Christy by sharing a project or two that Christy created. Our creative jar filled with her designs is literally endless 🙂 This week we are looking back to the Summer 2015 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine. In this issue Christy designed layouts for her regular Tool Junkie Article, featuring embellishments she created out of polymer clay. Here is one of the creations. Using Polymer Clay to Make Tile Embellishments 1. Brush the embossing folder with cornstarch to keep the clay from sticking. 2. Knead the polymer clay until…

Looking back to the Winter 2015/16 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine – Christy Riopel had a ton of fun with her Plaid Mod Melts and glue gun! I love it when unconventional scrapbooking supplies find their way onto scrapbooking projects. On this layout Christy created that cute little red heart using her Plaid Mod melts, molds and heat gun. She also used these products to create that really cool white scribble, splatter in the background. SUPER DUPER LOVE IT!  The next time you are at the craft store and see all those coloured glue sticks for your heat gun – GRAB a few! Adding and creating embellishments with your hot glue is a wee bit addicting!  While Christy was working on her projects for her Winter 2015 Tool Junkie article – I was completely inspired AND was 100% guilty of going out and making a hot glue gun, molds and…

As I went through all the blog posts that Christy Riopel supplied Creative Scrapbooker Magazine over the years, I was once again AWE-STRUCK  by how incredibly talented Christy was. Often you can look at a layout or project and  say “That was created 10 or 15 years ago” based on the style or design of the layout. That just isn’t the case with Christy’s designs. They are timeless creations that look like they could have been created yesturday. Like this layout Christy created almost 10 years ago featuring chipboard gears from FabScraps. This week I am sharing with you the extact blog post Christy shared with us – TEN YEARS AGO! Amazing! Christy Riopel’s Blog Post Using Christmas Ornaments as Embellishments by Christy Riopel With all the stores stocking up Christmas ornaments I often keep my eye out for themed ornaments that are flat enough and super fun to use as…

Ever wonder what the heck texture paste, gesso and all those other mediums are and what they are used for? Way back in the Summer 2016 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine we asked Christy Riopel to do a feature article called “Mad for Mediums” to answer these very questions. In this article, Christy played with and explained the various uses of the different kinds of gesso and texture paste. Her projects included techniques using a variety of different types of gesso with everyday scrapbooking supplies like  stencils, recycled magazines, distress spray, dies and so much more. She had so much that she wanted to share with everyone that we ended up dividing  the article into a TWO part series. Part one can be found in the Summer 2016 issue and Part two can be found in the Fall 2016 issue. Coloring Texture Paste One of my favourite techniques that Christy…

Sewing on your paper crafting projects, without a doubt, adds an instant homemade feel to just about anything. Over the years we have encouraged our readers in a number of different articles and features within Creative Scrapbooker Magazine to dust off their sewing machines and to not be afraid to add sewing to their next project. Fall 2012 Issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine In the Fall 2012 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine our Frugal Scrapbooker – Connie Nichol – wrote an article entitled “Put a Hole In It”. This article touched not only on adding machine sewing to your scrapbook projects – but to not be afraid to add faux stitching or to simply add holes in a decorative way using a basic hole punch to create fun designs. Connie always finds a way to add embellishments to your projects for pennies!  She truly is our #1 Frugal Scrapbooker! Christy Riopel’s…

Looking back to the Fall 2013 issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine when Christy Riopel crafted up a “Crafty Halloween” feature just in time to inspire all those crafty halloween people out there.  This feature was full of interesting, easy to create and relatively inexpensive ideas to decorate your home for a party, for the big halloween day or to craft with kids at school or in play groups. Scary Apothecary  One of the things I loved the most about Christy’s article was this apothecary set up. Christy simply filled tiny glass bottles of  different shapes and sizes with things like rocks, grains, rice – whatever – she added some labels and BOOM – you got yourself a scary looking medicine cabnet! How fun!!!! Spellbook Add even MORE spookiness to your medicine cabnet by creating a SPELLBOOK! This is so Harry Potter. You will have a ton of fun adding  your…
