Hi there! Iβm excited to be back today to share a layout featuring a couple of new products that were released by Creative Memories this month β the Sorbet Collection and the Rectangle Templates for the Custom Cutting System!
The Sorbet Collection is full of delicious colors and patterns, and it also has a bit of a retro feel to it. I dug out a variety of old photos of myself that echoed the colors and had a bit of a vintage look. I knew I would have to tone down the bright, busy pattern of the paper with a solid color to make the photos stand out. But instead of just using the Rectangle CCS Templates to simply matt my photos, I thought I would try my hand at creating a cut-work style overlay with them!
First, I traced out the various sizes of rectangles and squares onto a 12 x 12 piece of white cardstock, leaving a little bit of space between the shapes. Then I used the templates and the red Custom Cutting System blade to cut around the outside and inside the shapes. When I reached the places where the shapes met, I simply lifted the blade off the template and moved it to the next place that needed to be cut, thus keeping all the shapes connected. I did have to use an exacto knife to get into the corners a little bit more precisely than the blades did.
After cutting, I turned the overlay over to hide the pencil lines and it was ready for the photos. I cropped the photos with my Personal Trimmer and attached them to the back side of the overlay with Repositionable Tape Runner adhesive so I could get the placement inside the open frames just right.
I then mounted the entire overlay onto the patterned paper with regular Tape Runner adhesive. The large white rectangles highlighted the photos perfectly and broke up the busy background. I added several of the cute Sorbet die-cut embellishments in clusters, layering them and popping them up off the layout with Foam Squares for added dimension. I used a leftover shape that had been cut from the inside of one of the rectangles as my journaling box. I jotted a couple of notes about how old I was in the photos and where they were taken with my Black Dual-Tip Pen and tucked it under the embellishment cluster in the lower right hand corner. A few adhesive gems from the embellishment pack added some subtle sparkle and finished off the layout.

Love creative memories tried order Inc new frames but out of stock
Stupid question but do the mats have to be that wide? I like the idea of them, but not necessarily so wide. And yes, they’re out of stock π
Hi Elaine! Yes, the Rectangle Templates were such a hot item that they sold out quickly. But CM has another batch on order and they will be in stock in mid to late March. Keep checking for your next chance to order them!
Hi Evelyn! I don’t have exact measurements with me right now, but I used the red blade which gives the smallest cut on both the inside and the outside of the rectangles, so this is about as small as you could get them in a project like this. You could of course use the templates in the normal way and place your phots on top which would allow you to have a much smaller mat! Hope that helps…please feel free to contact me if you need some additional info or specific measurements!
