Hello everyone, Kim here today with a mixed media blog share! In the summer issue of Creative Scrapbooker Magazine, Connie Nichol, our frugal scrapbooker, has an article all about using vintage sewing patterns. This featured article shows lots of fun ways to incorporate patterns onto cards and layouts. I thought I would share how I used them in a project! I have done up a 2-page mixed media layout in my Prima Travelers Mixed Media Notebook. This fun little notebook has various types of paper to work on; black & cream mixed media, kraft, cardstock and a heavy vellum. I have adhered some of the tissue paper pattern on the left side of my project and the packaging on the right side using Prima Soft Matte Gel. I choose to paint a thin layer of watered down Mint Impasto over the entire project to tone the red down and ‘push’…
Hello everyone, Kerry Engel here today on the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine blog playing with the Explorer Journal by Momenta. When I first saw this glittery Momenta journal I envisioned a metallic-y, jewel-studded boho book. I was thinking of gold glitter, soft jute, and beach beads. To achieve my boho look I took apart an old necklace to create dangling embellishments and I strung beads on a fishing wire. I tied lots of jute and attached tags that protruded and extended over the sides. The Explorer Journal is made of a heavy, sturdy, leather-like fabric. To embroider on it I pre-punched holes with an awl. I stitched the flowers using the lazy daisy stitch and cotton thread. I learned how to embroider from my Baba (grandmother) way back in the ’70s when boho first was cool. Shiny brads completed my front cover. I wanted to cover up the stitches on the…
When I travel I like to document my thoughts, experiences and days in a journal. When I have a bit more time (or my husband needs a nap) I like to draw and record the colours and patterns around me too. Kelly Klapstein’s new products were made for hand lettering but the minute I got my hands on them I knew they’d be great for using as a journal. Traveler’s journals are all the rage right now and Kelly’s journals and juicy pens are definitely going into my suitcase. If you do a bit of prep before you leave you can have fun making water color backgrounds to add more interest to your documentation. Here’s how I created my journal: 1] I prepped my journal page by spreading gesso with an old hotel room key (a loyalty card would work too). It doesn’t have to be smooth, actually a…
When I first picked up a brush pen 3 years ago and began practicing lettering, I quickly started to think about how I could teach others how to learn this beautiful art form of calligraphy. Soon I developed my own set of tracing worksheets (just like I used in elementary school) that would help others develop the skills to write pretty letters. Then American Crafts came along, and we collaborated to design an entire product line of pens, workbooks, practice journals and more that would make learning calligraphy easy and fun. Now I can teach workshops with my own Kelly Creates pens and workbooks! If you can’t attend a workshop, here is what you need to learn brush lettering: Workbooks, a Practice Pad, and The Deluxe Lettering Kit, which has both large and small brush tip pens for both workbooks. You could also use the Dream Pens (large brush tip)…
Hello creative friends! Leah O’Neil here today on the Creative Scrapbooker Magazine blog. Welcome back to my creative planning blog series where I show you a variety of planners and creative ways to use them. Today I want to show you one of my favorite new products from Simple Stories, the Vintage Floral travelers notebooks. Travelers notebooks are so portable and easy to carry with you anywhere. You can load them up with notebook inserts that you can customize in SO MANY ways! I used mine as a travel journal on my recent trip to Oregon and Southern California. I was able to use it to easily jot down memories and store away little mementos I picked up while on the trip. I didn’t have a lot of time for decorating my pages while on vacation, but I made sure to take lots of notes about how we spent our…
